The Hutchinson School Board Monday monitored student progress in the critical 21st century skills of information, media and technology.
In less than a generation, students’ access to information has gone from spending time in a library to carrying all that information and more in the palm of their hand on a data device such as a smart phone.
The challenge for education has gone from teaching students where to find the information to evaluating the information and then using it in ways that can be understood by others.
To reflect the changes, more college and career ready standards were embedded into the multi-media class at Hutchinson Middle School – 8. One project, for example, required students to do a multi-media project on the American Revolution that addressed both English language arts and social studies standards.
Also during Monday’s meeting, the board proclaimed March as Youth Arts Month and heard a presentation from K-6 art teachers and students. On Wednesday, the district’s online art show opens at www.usd308art.com.
March 1, artwork from eight USD 308 students will be displayed in the capitol building in Topeka.
