HUTCHINSON, Kan. – A woman arrested after authorities were called to the 200 block of South Plum in July of last year where she was reportedly running naked outside with three children, was granted probation for two years.
22-year-old Michelle Taylor was charged with aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer, battery of a law enforcement officer, criminal damage to property, assault of a law enforcement officer, interference with law enforcement and child endangerment. But she entered a plea to aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and simple assault of a law enforcement officer.
Her attorney, Sarah Sweet-McKinnon argued for the departure Friday citing her mental issues, saying after her arrest, she was taken to Larned State Hospital for an evaluation and is still receiving treatment for her mental illness today. She apparently believed that someone was out to kill her.
The case started when police arrived at the scene and found Taylor and the three kids outside naked. Police were forced to subdue Taylor who at one point allegedly struck an officer in the face twice. She’s also alleged to have tried to reach for another officers side arm. She had to be tased and was initially taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for 0bservation, but then later taken to Larned. She was apparently speaking in gibberish when the officers arrived.
Judge Rose agreed to the probation even though the pre-sentence report suggested community corrections. The underlying sentence in the case is a year and six months in prison.
