SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — It wasn’t a major accident, but it has forced Reno County Public Works to close off West 6th Avenue, west of South Hutchinson.
One car from a Union Pacific train left the tracks about 4:30 p.m., leaving the section of 6th Avenue blocked between Broadacres and Valley Pride Roads. According to UP’s Todd Plank, a box car containing salt was with a group of cars being pushed into the freight yard when its leading truck slipped inside the tracks. The train pushed the car for about 50 yards before coming to a stop. The car stayed upright and there were no injuries. Plank said it could be tomorrow before the road is open again.
A crew was being brought in to re-rail the car and make track repairs.
