Turon man sentenced to three years, two months in aggravated battery case

Tyler Truhlar

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 25-year-old Turon man who entered pleas to a charge of aggravated battery and criminal threat, while the more serious charge of attempted second-degree murder was dismissed was ordered to prison. Judge Tim Chambers denied a defense motion for a non-prison sanction and ordered the sentence for Tyler Truhlar be served.

He was arrested on April 2, 2014 after a domestic altercation with a woman in Turon who says she was badly beaten and choked. The attempted second-degree murder charge was in the alternative to a charge of aggravated battery. He entered “no contest” pleas to the two counts.

The case centers on the incident where the alleged victim claims that she told Truhlar she didn’t want him to come over to her home after he had sent her a text. He later showed up anyway and the two began arguing. He then allegedly punched her as many as 20 times, striking her on the left side of her face, including hitting her on the nose. He then choked her. She managed to get outside to call 911, but he followed her and, at some point, knocked her to the ground, then slammed the left side of her head into the pavement a couple of times. She was taken to Pratt Regional Medical Center for treatment after the incident. The two had dated at some point and the victim testified that he didn’t like her texting or talking with other men.

The victim didn’t speak at the hearing Friday, but she did have a written statement that was read to the judge by Senior Assistant District Attorney Steve Maxwell. In that statemnt, she says she doesn’t believe he has shown any remorse for what he did and called his actions a “cycle of abuse.” She apparently also indicated some concern with him living so close and fears he could do something again. She asked that he be sent to prison.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After the sentencing hearing for a former Hutchinson Correctional Facility inmate was continued two weeks ago, the hearing was held Friday afternoon and 28-year-old Steven Stumpner was sentenced to 20-years, seven months in prison. That sentence will run consecutive to the sentence he’s already serving.

He entered a plea to a reduced charge of attempted rape while a second charge of aggravated sexual battery was dropped by the state. Stumpner admitted in court to the sexual contact with a female contract employee back on July 17, 2014. He forced the nurse at the prison into a sexual encounter when he pushed her up against a wall and sexually assaulted her without her consent.

As part of the agreement, he also waived his right to appeal any sentence handed down in the case and will have to register as a sex offender. There will also be a restitution hearing which Judge Joe McCarville scheduled for April 17.

Stumpner is serving time in prison for two counts of aggravated robbery, two counts of theft and battery of a correction’s officer.

Reno County man granted corrections in indecent liberties case

Cody Buck 2

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The man who entered a plea for the inappropriate sexual contact with a 14-year-old girl was granted community corrections for three years with an underlying sentence of two years and six months in prison.

Cody Buck entered the plea and was found guilty of one count of indecent liberties with a child which allegedly occurred in July of 2013. Sheriff officials say he was seventeen at the time and occurred in the Turon area of Reno County. The case started when sheriff investigators began looking into a case of a man kissing a minor child which led to the discovery of the more serious encounter involving the two.

Both sides recommended the sentence and Judge Trish Rose indicated in court that he showed remorse for his actions in a written statement. She also granted the request because there doesn’t appear to be any on going pattern of this kind of conduct.
