Turon man and the state in plea negotiations in attempted murder case
HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Judge Tim Chambers set a motions deadline for a 25-year-old Turon man accused of some serious crimes including attempted murder, but the didn’t yet set a trial date.
Tyler Truhlar was arrested by the Reno County Sheriff’s office back on April 2, after a domestic altercation with a woman in that city who alleges she was badly beaten and choked.
The attempted second-degree murder charge is in the alternative to a charge of aggravated battery. That means he could be convicted of one or the other, but not both. Truhlar is also charged with aggravated burglary and criminal threat.
Defense Attorney Kelly Driscoll Friday told the judge that they are in plea negotiations with the state asked for another pretrial hearing to be scheduled about 30-days down the road. The Judge set October 31 as the day for all motions to be filed and set another pretrial hearing for the case on that date. At that time, he may learn if the two sides have reached some sort of agreement or if the case will proceed to trial.
The case centers on the incident where the alleged victim claims that she told Truhlar she didn’t want him to come over to her home after he had sent her a text, but later showed up anyway and the two then began arguing. He then allegedly punched her as many as 20 times, striking her on the left side of her face, including hitting her on the nose and then choked her. She managed to get outside to call 911, but he followed her and at some point knocked her to the ground, then slammed the left side of her head into the pavement a couple of times. She was taken to Pratt Regional Medical Center for treatment after the incident.
The two had dated at some point and the victim testified that he didn’t like her texting or talking with other men.
Truhlar is currently free on a $6,750 bond and as it stands now, his next court appearance will be October 31.

Hutch Man read complaint in domestic aggravated assault case
It takes a lot to get Senior Judge William “Buck” Lyle angry, but a 25-year-old Hutchinson man came close to doing that Friday morning.
Brandon Brandhorst is charged with two counts of aggravated assault and domestic battery for an incident back on September 20. There is supposed to be a no-contact order with the victim, but he showed up in court with her thinking that the no-contact order ended today. He also thought he could get the charges dropped with her not wanting to pursue the case. He came close to arguing with the judge who informed him that he’s lucky he didn’t get thrown in jail because of violating the no contact order. Assistant District Attorney Cheryl Allen also informed him that he could still be taken to jail over that issue. He was also informed that only the state can drop the charges.
Brandhorst is accused of pulling a knife and a Highpoint 380 ACP handgun and threatening the victim with it. He’s also accused of striking her during the altercation which is reported to have occurred at an apartment in the 600 block of North Maple. But, he again argued that there was never a gun involved.
The judge did manage to inform him of the possible charges and possible penalties and scheduled the case for a waiver-status hearing on October 8.
