Hutchinson Fireman responded to an area around Nickerson Boulevard and Wild Rose around 10:45 a-m, Wednesday morning for a grass fire. They found a small grass fire in the rail road right of way. The fire also caught a pile of rail road ties on fire.
The fire was controlled in 15-minutes, keeping it from crossing Nickerson Boulevard. Units were on scene for an hour and half.
City of Hutchinson Public Works brought out a front end loader to help move the railroad ties so that they could be completely extinguished.
The cause of the fire was due to an electrical malfunction on the utility pole that energized the ground wire. No one was injured in the fire.
Winds were reported to be gusting to 50 mph at the time of call. Most units were released once the fire was contained.
Fire Department Officials want to warn drivers to avoid areas where the fire department is working. Thick smoke was blowing across Nickerson Boulevard making visibility zero.
They say its is best to turn around and avoid the area or wait until the fire is brought under control and fire units clear the road.
