We knew it was coming, and now its happened. Officials broke ground for the new Reno County Jail Monday meaning the work will now get into full swing. The new jail site, is at 1800 South Severance, the corner of Severance and Blanchard.
Its all a result of county voters who approved a half cent sales tax to build the new jail and move some county offices to what is currently the Reno County Jail Annex.
Other plans for the money raised include adding a new entrance to the courthouse and doing some improvements to the Law Enforcement Center.
The new 77-thousand plus square foot jail is being built on land purchased from the Kansas Department of Corrections on a 10-acre lot. It’s estimated that construction would take about 18-months or so.
