Captain Richard Phillips, a former hostage and author, has been announced as the fourth speaker for the 2014 Ray and Stella Dillon Lecture Series at Hutchinson Community College.
Phillips will lecture on September 23, at 10:30 a-m, in the Hutchinson Sports Arena. The lecture is open to the public. Cost to attend the lecture is only $10, with students admitted free.
For more information on the series, or to become a patron, call Laurie Sawyer at 665-3505.
Phillips was the captain of the Maersk Alabama when it was taken hostage by Somali pirates in 2009. Phillips was held at gunpoint on a tiny lifeboat by the ruthless hijackers until his dramatic rescue at sea by Navy Seals. His story has been made into an Oscar-nominated film with Tom Hanks in the lead role as Phillips.
2014 is the 33rd season for the Dillon Lecture Series on the HCC Campus. The addition of Phillips completes the 2014 season which began with former CIA Agent Tony Mendez and the other two remaining speakers: journalist Laura Ling on April 1, and NASA engineer Dr. Adam Steltzer on Nov. 14.
