A come-and-go informational meeting to update the public on efforts to secure a Transportation Alternatives Funds grant for the next phase of downtown Hutchinson Main Street streetscape improvements will be on Thursday, February 6, in the Flag Theatre lobby, 310 N. Main.
Members of the Downtown Hutchinson Streetscape Task Force will be available to answer questions and gather feedback during the day from 8 to 10 a-m, 11:30 a-m to 1:30 p-m, and 4:30 to 6:30 p-m.
The availability of state transportation enhancement program monies has precipitated movement on an initiative to extend streetscape improvements on North Main Street, from the railroad tracks at Third Avenue up to Fifth. The public meeting is in anticipation of a KDOT application being filed by Feb. 14.
If the grant were awarded to the project, it would enable improvements to sidewalks, landscaping and lighting and streetscape furnishings in a downtown area called the Santa Fe District. The materials, style and configuration would be complimentary to the work completed in 2007 on Main from Avenue A to Third, including handicapped parking, larger parking stalls and additional pull-out space.
The city has invested $5.7 million, largely by leveraging state transportation grants, to complete streetscape, street and utility improvements on Main from Avenue C to Third. The public investment has been accompanied by significant private investment in historical restoration of downtown buildings. The original streetscape plan encompassed improvements north to Seventh and south to Carey Park.
Letters of support also are sought for the project application. To provide a letter or for more information, contact Jim Seitnater, downtown director, at 694-2677.
