Luckily no one was injured, however a dog was lost in a house fire east of Hutchinson Wednesday evening.
Just before 6:30 p-m, Hutchinson Fire Department Crews responded to the 500 block of North Kent Road for a structure fire. When they arrivad, units found heavy fire venting through the roof with heavy involvement in 40 percent of the residence.
The occupant of the home stated he was changing a fuel pump and using a propane heater in the garage when the fire started. He was able to get all the occupants out of the home except for a dog. The dog was later found deceased.
This residence had a long narrow driveway and a small turn around area that did not accommodate bigger fire trucks. Firefighters laid a hose line down the driveway and had to pump water off of Kent Rd., to a fire truck at the house.
Also, the area doesn’t have fire hydrants and water had to be hauled to the scene from 3 miles away. Eleven fire units responded to the call with assistance from Reno/Harvey Joint Fire District #2 (Buhler), Reno Fire District 9 (Haven), and Reno Fire District #8 (Yoder/Pleasantview). Hutchinson Fire Department responded with 7 units.
In 2009, all Reno County Fire Chiefs signed an Automatic Aid Agreement to respond a neighboring water tender automatically on structure fires in non-hydrant areas. In the last 6 months, Hutchinson Fire Department has relied on this at two well involved structure fires.
The fire department will be on scene for several more hours to control hot spots. Red Cross was called to assist the family.
Reno County Sheriff’s officers were also on scene and shut down Kent Rd., for about three hours.
