The two most recognizable displays standing outside of the Kansas Cosmosphere will be getting a much needed face lift Through the Kansas Community Service Program, the Cosmosphere was awarded the opportunity to return $101,000 in tax credits to donors who contributed through December 2013 toward approved projects. That means that there will be enough funds to repaint the Titan 2 and the Mercury Redstone spacecraft that stand outside the space museum.
Under the tax program the Cosmosphere raised $202,000 under its approved plan and that $101,000 credits have been awarded. The original Cosmosphere application requested $250,000 in credits to support four specific projects and while fewer were actually awarded to the organization, through a combination of ongoing vendor negotiations and solicitation of additional funds, success has been realized:
The refurbishing of the Titan 2 rocket and the Mercury Redstone will cost about 30-thousand dollars and will be completed this spring. Other notable projects include the refurbishment and conversion of the Carey IMAX Theater to digital film technology, new seating and carpeting. This project was completed and the new Carey Digital Dome Theater reopened in October 2012 at a total cost of $130,000 and the painting of the museums roof awning was completed in early summer 2012 at a total cost of $28,000.
