John Robert Cantu 3

One of the six suspects in the attempted murder of a Hutchinson man who wanted time to file two motions, one being a motion to withdraw his plea and also a motion to get new counsel. That apparently led to Judge Tim Chambers continuing the sentencing hearing in the case.

Joseph LeShore had been scheduled for sentencing clear back in November, but that was continued after he was granted a new attorney at that time. He originally had Wichita Attorney Alice Osburn and then local attorney Shannon Crane was assigned to the case.

LeShore indicated last month that he wasn’t happy with her either, so Judge Chambers gave him till December 27, to file the motions and apparently did so. .

He had entered a plea to an amended charge of attempted 2nd degree murder, aggravated burglary, aggravated assault and aggravated battery. He admitted in court his involvement in the beating and stabbing of Jeffrey Payne.

Meanwhile, another of the defendants was bound over for trial once again after a preliminary hearing in front of Judge Joe McCarville.

The state was able to show enough evidence against John Robert Cantu that showed premeditation that those involved including Cantu that they new what they were going to do when they went to the home of Jeffrey Payne. The state had amended the complaint against Cantu after it was clear at an earlier hearing that Judge Tim Chambers would dismiss the attempted first degree murder charge, but he was once again bound over on that charge.

The trial is still scheduled to begin on January 28, in front of Judge Chambers

Cantu along with the two LeShore brothers, Desmund Cantu, Sean Arevalo-Mendoza and Troy Bell are accused with the beating and stabbing of Jeffrey Payne on February 18, of last year. They allegedly broke into his home and stabbed him numerous times in the leg and torso.
