As expected, Reno County Commissioners approved a resolution which exempts the Reno County Courthouse and adjacent Law Enforcement Center from the provision passed by the Kansas House allowing concealed carry in public buildings.
The county had sought a 6-month exemption back on July 1, but now want the exemption from January 1, 2014 to January 1, 2018. However, they expect to have a new entrance and deeper security in place soon, so even though the exemption is for four year, that could change at a later date.
Commission Chair Dan Deming also brought up sales tax collections for the year. It shows for the year 2013, the county is ahead of last year. He says the county for the year collected 4-million, 474-thousand, 355-dollars compared to 4-million, 204-thousand, 149-dollars in 2012. That makes the county ahead by 270-thousand dollars.
According to Deming, the county also collected 473-thousand, 378-dollars from the added sales tax approved by voters to build a new jail and make improvements to the law enforcement center as well as moving some county departments to the current jail annex once the new jail is complete.
