HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Fire Crews Tuesday evening responded to a structure fire the 200 Block of West 24th.
Arriving units reported visible flames on the southwest corner of the structure. The fire was contained to the exterior of the structure and extinguished rapidly. Area residents advised of a burning leaf odor just prior to the 911 report. The home was unoccupied and all utility services were disconnected. Following the investigation, the most likely cause was an improperly discarded cigarette traveling from the street side due to high winds, in turn igniting a pile of leaves next to the structure. The exterior property damage is estimated at $2,500.
The Hutchinson Fire Department responded 6 units with no injuries reported. That was just before 6 p.m.
Then just before 6:30 p.m., units responded to the 1500 block of West 14th for an additional structure fire. Arriving units confirmed a fire involving the South side lower exterior of the home as well as an interior living area. Initial reports advised no occupants were home however a pet remained inside the structure. A few neighbors did attempt a rescue prior to the arrival of fire crews, but were not successful. Later the animal was found by firefighters, unharmed. The fire damage is estimated at $30,000, to include contents. Again due to the high winds and extremely dry conditions, an improperly discarded cigarette, finding its way to the exterior foundation of the home remains the likely source of ignition.
