HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Three people were taken to jail early Wednesday morning after police were called to the 600 block of West 11th on the report of suspicious activity.
When they arrived, an officer says he saw a vehicle in an alley behind the home. The driver of the car started backing out of the alley and the officer shined his flashlight inside the vehicle and discovered none were wearing a seat belt. The officer then pulled them over.
The calling party then called dispatch a second time stating that one of the individuals in the car had a handgun. The officers then asked the occupants to step out of the vehicle one at a time so he could check for weapons. As 32-year-old Orlando Cornelius of Wichita (top left) was starting to exit the vehicle, an officer alleges that he made a jerking motion with what he believes was the gun and the put his legs outside the vehicle. The officer then alleges he saw a .40 caliber Smith and Wesson handgun on the floor board of the vehicle.
He placed Cornelius in handcuffs, then allegedly found drugs along with a scale and other paraphernalia inside a console of the vehicle.
Cornelius was taken to jail for being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of meth, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to package, personal use drug paraphernalia and no tax stamp. His bond was set at $13,000 and in court, the bond was left the same.
Arrested with him was 32-year-old Adina L Smith (shown above). She faces charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to package, possession of marijuana and no tax stamp. Her bond was set at $9,000, however during a court appearance, Judge Joe McCarville lowered it to $5,000. She claims she shouldn’t be in jail because the care wasn’t hers, even though she was the alleged driver.
The third person arrested was 39-year-old Sylvester Givens (top right). He faces charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana. His bond set at $6,000. He apparently has an extensive criminal record out of Louisiana, according to statements made in court by Assistant District Attorney Andrew Davidson. His bond was left the same.
All three will be back in court on Sept. 23, for the formal reading of charges.
