HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The 23-year-old man shot by Hutchinson Police earlier this week made a first court appearance after his arrest on Thursday.
During the brief hearing, Judge Tim Chambers told Joseph Roman of the potential charges, which could include 15 counts of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer and one count of aggravated assault. He told Roman that he would set his bond at a round number of $100,000 and that he would order the state to have formal charges filed by next Tuesday, meaning he should make another court appearance at that time.
Roman was released from Hutchinson Regional Medical Center after being shot by police after he pointed a shotgun at them during a standoff that lasted over four hours on Aug. 5. Roman suffered a gunshot wound to the hand in the incident.
There were no injuries to anyone else, including officers and the suspect’s father. According to Capt. Troy Hoover, five officers have been placed on administrative leave as per normal procedure.
A full investigation of this incident continues by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
