HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Hutchinson Police were involved in a shooting early this morning. It all started when officers responded to 903 East Ave. C around 10:45 last night to the report of a disturbed subject.
It was reported that a subject was threatening his father at that residence. Prior to the officer’s arrival, the suspect identified as 23-year-old Joseph Roman, had fled on foot and could not be located at that time. The officers reported the incident and left the area. A few hours later officers were sent to the same address again after the suspect returned to the residence.
When officers arrived on scene they found Roman in the garage of the residence. The suspect pointed a shotgun at the officers forcing their retreat. Roman eventually shot a hole through the garage door with the shotgun and then placed the barrel of the shotgun through the hole and fired several more times near the officers. The suspect then immediately pointed the shotgun directly at the officers at which time the officers were forced to fire upon the suspect. Just seconds later Roman opened the garage door and came out unarmed. Officers placed him into custody without further incident. Roman was taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center with a gun shot wound to his hand. There were no injuries to anyone else, including officers.
A full investigation of this incident is underway by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation
