HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Local movie goers will have a unique opportunity this Thursday evening at 7 to see, absolutely free, the movie “Selma,” which is an American historical drama based on the 1965 Selma to Montgomery, Ala., voting rights marches led by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and three other civil rights leaders.
This film was an Academy Awards nominee for best picture and has won several Golden Globes, including best picture, director and actor. It also won the Academy and Golden Globe Awards for best original song.
As part of an expanded Emancipation Day program, “Selma” will be presented on Thursday evening at the Fox Theatre at no charge and the public is welcome. A generous donation by Tom Elliott and his staff at Elliott Mortuary made bringing the film possible in hopes of setting both an historical and meaningful tone to the launch of this year’s Emancipation weekend activities.
This year is the 50th anniversary of the historic march.
Again, that’s this Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Fox Theatre in downtown Hutchinson.
