HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The Hutchinson USD 308 Summer Lunch Program saw a dramatic increase in the number of summer lunches served this year.
The program, which just ended on Friday, served 22,994 meals this year, compared to 18,810 a year ago. The total represents an increase of 4,184 lunches, or about 22 percent. That comes out to an average of more than 570 lunches each day, which is an increase of about 89 meals per day. This year, the program expanded its service area providing sack lunches at the Avenue A splash park, making a total of five locations where children could get a free lunch.
While the summer program is over, the Reno County Food Bank is providing a free lunch to all pre-school through high school children from noon until 1 p.m. The program will run from now until Aug. 17. The meals are available at the Salvation Army at 700 N. Walnut.
