HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Reno County District Attorney Keith Schroeder has determined that Hutchinson Police officers were justified in the shooting death of a Hutchinson man June 23rd.
Schroeder said that after thoroughly reviewing the investigation conducted by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, he determined that no wrongdoing was committed and Hutchinson Police Officers were completely justified in the actions they took resulting in the death of Jonathan P. Wilson on June 23. Wilson was shot in the in the 800 Blk. of N. Van Buren.
Officers were dispatched to the scene with information that Wilson had confessed to a murder and was armed with weapons. When officer arrived he behaved erratically inside the residence where three small children were located. Efforts to convince him to come outside failed. Concerned for the safety of the children, officers did an admirable job removing them to safety. Wilson then essentially attacked officers by throwing objects and knives at them, which at that time officers fired their weapons. Wilson’s death came the morning after a body was discovered in a dry creek bed south of Nickerson. The body was identified as 38-year-old Mary Ann Arnett.
Schroeder says after review of the investigation and video recordings associated with the incident, no charges will be brought against any of the Hutchinson Police Officers who discharged their firearms resulting in the death of Wilson. He went on to say that all officers perceived the same threat and fired at the same time. The shooting, although tragic, appears justified under Kansas law.
