HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The pretrial hearing for a Hutchinson teen accused of killing his mother and sister was continued Friday because of having a new attorney.
Fifteen-year-old Samuel Vonachen is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and aggravated arson. Authorities allege Vonachen who was 14-years-old at the time spread gas through the downstairs of his family’s home then set it on fire. This occurring back on Sept. 26, 2013. His 11-year-old sister and 47-year-old mother died in the fire. His father however was able to escape.
Kelly Driscoll with the Regional Public Defenders Office had represented Vonachen after the case was moved to adult court, but she has since left that office, meaning a new attorney has been assigned.
The pretrial hearing has been pushed back to Aug. 14, according to Senior Assistant District Attorney Steve Maxwell, but the trial is still scheduled to begin at this point on Sept. 21.
