HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The Hutchinson School Board approved a contract Monday with a Hays company to replace the junior varsity gymnasium floor at Hutchinson High School during its final meeting of the 2014-15 year.
During the final week of the 2014-15 school year, a game of indoor soccer broke a supply line to a water fountain in the gym. Before the main water valve to the fountain could be located and turned off, hundreds of gallons of water had gushed onto the floor.
Efforts to mitigate and later repair the damage were unsuccessful, leaving the floor unusable.
Under the approved motion, repairs to the floor will cost $134,658 of which insurance has paid $128,715.11.
The district has removed the fountain from the junior varsity gym to avoid future water issues.
Because of the timing of when the materials will be delivered, Von Lintel Refinishing and Flooring, Inc., of Hays won’t be able to start on the floor until Sept. 8 with installation completed the week of Oct. 5.
Also during the meeting, four members who are leaving the board were recognized for their service. Members Mary Lynn Baker, Sarah Blake, Kent Hilst and Mike Mendoza did not run for re-election this year, and Monday’s meeting was the final meeting for the four.
