HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Attendance at this years ComicCon event was up, as approximately 4,500 fans joined Jon Robinson and his family for the 2nd Annual Comic Book and Pop Culture Celebration.
Fans and exhibitors descended on the Kansas State Fair from across Kansas, as well as Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. As in previous years, Mayor Jade Piros de Carvalho and the Hutchinson City Council issued a proclamation which declared the city would again be known as Smallville, Kansas – home of Clark Kent / Superman during the event and accompanying downtown festival.
This year’s ComicCon activities were spread over two buildings and included 108 exhibitors, an increase of 45 from the first year. Floor space was sold out and operating from a waiting list. Vendors provided fans an opportunity to buy, sell, and trade new and vintage collectible items ranging from comic books, statutes, toys, jewelry, unique replica props, as well as costume and clothing apparel. Artists and illustrators provided unique and original drawings and paintings. Authors provided autographs and interacted with fans regarding their inspirations for characters and story arcs.
Fans also had an opportunity to collect autographs, pose for photographs, and ask questions of Billy Dee Williams who starred as Lando Calrissian in the original Star Wars trilogy, Katrina Law starring as “Nyssa Al Ghul” in the CW series Arrow and “Mira” in the Starz series Spartacus; Manu Intiryami who starred as “Icheb” in Star Trek: Voyager; Vernon Wells who starred as “Wez” in Mad Max: The Road Warrior, “Bennett” in Commando, and the villain “Ransik” from the Power Rangers series; Lee Meriwether who starred as “Catwoman” in Batman: and Kathy Garver from Spiderman and his Amazing Friends and Family Affair.
The United States Postal Service was on hand to provide unique collectible items, stamps, and other products for fans. There was even a collectible postmark commemorating Smallville ComicCon which allowed fans to have their mail postmarked from Smallville, Kansas!
