HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The USD 308 School Board was briefed Monday on the process for creating new attendance boundaries for the district’s elementary schools.
In April, the board voted to remove one track of classes from McCandless Elementary School in the 2016-17 school year. The move is designed to save the district $350,000 annually, but impact class sizes only marginally.
Removing the track of classes will require the district to realign boundaries for the seven elementary schools that use attendance areas for determining student placement. The district’s eighth elementary school – Hutchinson Magnet School at Allen – draws K-6 students from across the district for its STEM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Mathematics) programming.
Additionally, the district last realigned attendance area boundaries in 2010. Since that time, population in the city has continued to shift northward, increasing class sizes in some schools.
The district expects to contract with RSP to do the study.
During her report, Superintendent Dr. Shelly Kiblinger invited the board and the public to the open house for the Building Trades home. The open house will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday at the home, 814 W. 32nd.
