OMAHA — Union Pacific plans to invest about $120 million in 2015 to improve Kansas’ transportation infrastructure, including two major sections of the line serving Hutchinson and Reno County.
The work include a $20.2 million investment in the rail line between Whiteside and Pratt which calls for replacing nearly 25 miles of rail and repair the surfaces at 43 road crossings. The nations largest railroad also plans to replace more than 15 miles of rail line and resurface 28 grade crossings from Waldeck to near McPherson at a cost of $12.6 million The work is part of a planned $120 million capital expenditure in Kansas and adds to the nearly $30 million worth of work that was completed in Reno County in 2007, which stretched from Arlington to Inman.
Union Pacific plans to spend $4.2 billion across its network this year, following investments totaling more than $31 billion from 2005-2014. These investments contributed to a 38 percent decrease in derailments over the last 10 years.
