HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The Hutchinson Community College Board of Trustees began its May meeting with an introduction to a group of championship-winning students at HCC.
The board met several Agricultural Judging teams that competed at the recent North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture championships. The HCC teams won first in Crops and HCC won national championship in the overall sweepstakes event. Three other teams finished in the top five with Agricultural Knowledge third, Horticulture second and Soils fourth. This marked the second year in a row HCC was the top overall team, and the ninth time HCC has won the sweepstakes since 1995. In order to qualify for sweepstakes, HCC had to compete in at least seven of the 12 contests available, and HCC fielded teams in 11 of the 12 events.
The trustees also met the HCC Debate and Forensics teams that competed recently at the AFA/NIET National Tournament at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Ore., on April 4-6. HCC competed against over 90 two- and four-year schools attending from across the country. The team finished third in the nation among Community Colleges, as well as placing 44th amongst all schools at all levels competing in the event.
They also recognized the retirements of several individuals who will conclude their careers at HCC in May and June. The 2015 retirees include: Katherine Gill (Instructor of Surgical Technology); Becky Griggs (Instructor of Health Information Management); Kathy Larson (Instructor of Family and Consumer Sciences); Jeff Pelischek (Instructor of Music); Sylvia Call (J.F. Kennedy Library Staff); Star Gipson (Executive Director of Academic Services); Pat Leonard (Secretary); Willa Luetters (Business Office); Randy Myers (Vice President of Student Services); Don Rumback (Maintenance Department); Linda Seabaugh (Secretary); Lucinda Turner (Custodian); Sharon Webb (Director of Development-Radio Kansas); Jon Colglazer (Custodian); Loretta Horton (Chair of Allied Health Department); Janice Mattson (Custodian).
The Board also approved several items of routine business at its meeting.
