Local man charged in three drug distribution cases
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 20-year-old Hutchinson man appeared via-video from the Reno County Jail where he was told of the charges in three cases against him, all involving the distribution of drugs.
The first case, Elijah Metheny is charged with the sale of cocaine for a case that goes back to Dec. 17, 2014. In that case, he’s alleged to have sold less then 3.5 grams.
Then on Dec. 27, he’s charged with the sale of cocaine, again less then 3.5 grams. But, he’s also charged with conspiracy to distribute cocaine along with Malachi Lewis. The final count in this case is unlawful distribution of a controlled substance using a communications device. Lewis is charged in the same case with basically the same charges.
The third case involves the sale of marijuana, conspiracy to distribute marijuana with another man, Spencer Swafford and unlawful distribution of a controlled substance. This case goes back to January 7, 2015.
Metheny asked for a reduction of his bond which totals $30,500. The state objected because of the number of cases filed and Magistrate Judge Randy McEwen agreed because of the three cases occurring so close to each other.
He’ll be back in court for a status hearing on April 1.
Hutch man arrested for aggravated battery
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 20-year-old man has been arrested for suspicion of aggravated battery for an incident which occurred Tuesday afternoon.
Cody Andrew Martin is accused of striking another individual with a baseball bat. That person was apparently trying to break up a fight between him and another person. He says he only swung the bat once and hit the wrong person. He told the judge that he was using the bat as a defense move while the fight was going on.
His bond in the case was set at $5,000 at the time of his arrest, but because of his lack of criminal history, the judge lowered the bond to $3,000.
His case will be back before the court of April 1.
State files new complaint against Hutchinson man
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After the state at some point dismissed the case against a 38-year-old Hutchinson man, they have now refiled the case against him.
Charles Daniel Davis Jr., is now charged with battery of a law enforcement officer, two counts of criminal threat, two misdemeanor counts of assault of a law enforcement officer and interference with law enforcement.
The crimes against Davis occurred on June 9, when police were called to a home in the 1400 block of North Madison on the report of criminal damage. The alleged victim says Davis had damaged a television and a wall in the home. He told police that Davis was in the basement and they should use caution because he had been acting strange and had access to weapons.
When officers approached the basement, they told him to come upstairs and he allegedly responded back that he had a gun and a bomb. That gave officers the indication they could be in danger. They finally went in where Davis was and he allegedly resisted. One officer stated that the suspect bent his fingers back and tried to bite him. They tried to tase him and he blocked that with a blanket, but they were eventually able to get control of him and take him into custody.
He told Magistrate Judge Randy McEwen that this case is already pending in front of District Judge Tim Chambers, but the judge informed him that the state dismissed the original complaint and refiled the case. That means a new preliminary hearing will have to be held. The case as it stands now will be placed on a waiver-status docket in front of Judge Joe McCarville on April 15.
He’s jailed on a $5,000 bond.
