HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Officials at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center say they have removed all Blue Bell Ice Cream from the hospital and related facilities.
This after a recall of the ice cream was extended into Kansas Monday afternoon. According to HRMC Marketing Director Jerry Weathers, the hospital removed all the ice cream after The U.S. Food and Drug Administration reported that Blue Bell Ice Cream was recalling three 3 oz. institutional/food service ice cream cups because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
On March 22, the Kansas Department of Health & Environment reported one positive test for Listeria on a chocolate institutional/food service portion recovered from a hospital in Wichita. These cups are not sold through retail outlets such as convenience stores and supermarkets.
Weathers says there have been no reports of illness at HRMC or related facilities.
