Local man bound over in drug distribution case
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 26-year-old parolee arrested on suspicion of being in possession of methamphetamine with intent to sell was bound over for trial Monday by District Judge Joe McCarville. DeCarlos Colbert also faces trial on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to package, possession of marijuana, obstruction and no drug tax stamp.
He was arrested after a search warrant was served on his apartment at 507 E. 3 rd back on Oct. 22. Drug Unit Detectives allege that they found 12 individual bags, each containing a crystal substance with a total weight of around 126 grams. Also located in a bedroom was an open box of sandwich bags and a digital scale with residue. In the living room, they allegedly found a grinder with green vegetation, which tested positive for marijuana.
While they were serving the search warrant, Colbert apparently drove up to the residence and, as they tried to make contact with him, he allegedly ran into a field behind the home, but was he was quickly captured.
He did manage to make bond of $11,500, however failed to show for a status hearing so was arrested and the bond is now $50,000. His request for a bond reduction was denied.
Adding to his troubles is the possibility that more charges could be coming, including a possible charge of racketeering.
Colbert served prison time for the sale of drugs from a Sedgwick County case going back to 2008. He was paroled here in Hutchinson back in May of 2013. The sentence in the Sedgwick County case expired in May of 2014.
Arraignment is set for Feb. 2, in front of Judge Trish Rose.
Wichita man formally charged distribution case in Hutch
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 28-year-old Wichita man arrested just over a week ago for being in possession of a large quantity of high grade marijuana here in Hutchinson was before a judge Monday for the formal reading of charges.
Demarcus Phillips is charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of marijuana with a prior conviction.
The case started on Jan. 18, when Reno County Drug Unit detectives observed a vehicle pull into the back of a residence in the 1300 block of East 3rd. They saw a white male walk up to the drivers side window and met with the black male driving. Officers then approached the vehicle and allege that they could smell a strong odor of marijuana. The white male was placed in handcuffs and two black males in the vehicle were also placed in handcuffs. Detectives say behind the drivers seat was an Olive Garden bag that contained four aluminum pans each containing gallon size ziplock bags of marijuana. They say the bags contained approximately two pounds of what they called the high grade stuff. They also found three previously rolled marijuana cigarettes in the vehicle.
Phillips has prior convictions for drugs offenses in Sedgwick County and a possession with intent to sell conviction out of Saline County.
With the formal charges filed, his case moves to a waiver-status docket on February 4.
Search warrant leads to two arrested on drug charges
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Two local women arrested on meth related charges made their first appearance this morning where their bonds were left the same.
49-year-old Barbara Sunken is charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to sell, possession of drug paraphernalia with intent to package and no drug tax stamp.
On Sunday, a drug related search warrant was served on a home in the 600 block of West 13 th. She apparently gave detectives a zip-lock bag of a crystal substance which contained a crystal substance which weighed about five grams. She also apparently had some other baggies and a digital scales. After being read her Miranda rights, she’s told detectives that she sold meth to “live” and support her habit. She was apparently in the process of smoking meth from a pipe when drug unit detectives arrived.
36-year-old Kelley Blevins who also resided at the residence was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Located in bedroom was a zipper pouch that contained suspected marijuana. Ironically, sitting next to a court document with her name on it was a glass pipe which detectives believe was consistent with smoking meth. In fact a field test showed a positive result for meth.
Blevins has prior convictions for drugs going back to 2003 and 2004. She also has a case pending from 2013, according to statements made in court.
The bond for Sunken was left at $14,000, while the bond for Blevins set at $8,000. Both are expected back in court Wednesday or whenever the state files formal charges.
