The Kansas Department of Health and Environment samples public bodies of water for blue-green algae on a regular basis this time of year.
Based upon the latest sampling results, a warning is now in place for high levels of toxic blue-green algae at the Buhler City Lake here in Reno County, and the Colwich City Lake and Riggs Park Lake in Sedgwick County. Plus the warning continues for Memorial Park Lake or Veteran’s Lake, in Barton County.
When a Warning is issued, it’s advised that people, pets and livestock shouldn’t drink lake water. Residents also need to avoid swimming, wading or any other activities with full body contact of lake water.
You should also clean fish and rinse with clean water, consume only the fillet portion and discard all other parts. Also, don’t allow your pets to eat dried algae
There is also an advisory for one area lake, that being Marion Reservoir in Marion County.
