HUTCHINSON, Kan. — He was always teaching music in some way or another, and he brought jazz to more students over the years than most. Bryce Luty, long time music instructor at Hutchinson Community College has died.
Luty died Monday at the age of 77. Luty loved his music and had a knack of getting others to love it too. He taught music in the McPherson school system for 13 years before moving on to Hutchinson Community College. He was the leader in bringing jazz studies to the college and helped establish a scholarship program for those interested in jazz studies. Luty retired from HCC in 1998 but continued to play in bands and perform until his health started to fail earlier this year. Luty also taught music in Durham and Marion, Kansas in the 1950’s and 60’s.
Luty earned his Bachelors Degree in band from Bethany College in 1958, and his Masters in instrumental music from Wichita State University in 1965.
Services for Bryce Luty will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church at 17th & Main in Hutchinson. There will be a private burial.
