Hutch man faces arraignment in battery LEO and theft case
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 35-year-old Hutchinson man accused of getting into an altercation with an off-duty sheriff deputy and bound over for trial is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday.
Sonny Bray is accused of aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer, felony theft, battery and interference with law enforcement. He’s accused of biting one of the officers as he tried to take him into custody. This occurred at Tractor Supply at 1203 N. Lorraine back on Sept. 26. He is also alleged to have battered a woman at the store while all this was occurring. Deputy T.J. Perez suffered three broken ribs as a result of the exchange and was off duty for a short time as a result.
Perez, along with the manager, saw Bray leave the side of the store and throw three pairs of boots over a fence. Bray then was attempting to climb the fence when Perez took off after him. That led to the altercation and the deputy being injured.
Bray is currently serving time for another felony theft conviction where he was given a year and four months in prison. He was waiting sentencing in that case when this latest incident occurred. That theft occurred back in July of 2013.
Bray has other convictions for aggravated battery, criminal possession of a firearm, burglary, criminal damage, criminal discharge of a weapon and an aggravated weapons violation. Those crimes stretch over a period from 1997 to 2004.
Sentencing in kidnapping case again scheduled after 2 delays
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — After two continuances, the sentencing hearing for a 32-year-old Hutchinson man found guilty of kidnapping is scheduled once again for Friday.
The sentencing for Todd Lloyd was continued three weeks ago because no one knew he had been sent to the Kansas Department of Corrections, then last Friday, it was continued a second time because of a medical issue with his defense attorney.
The case goes back to April 23 when he came close to being shot by two Hutchinson Police officers during an altercation where he held his girlfriend at knife point. He eventually threw the knives down and, after a brief struggle, was taken into custody.
Even if he’s sentenced in this case on Friday, that won’t be the last we see of him. He has another case pending where he’s charged with criminal threat. The state alleges that he threatened the life of two officers, Sgt. Josh Radloff and Sgt. Eric Buller, who were involved in the kidnapping case. After being found guilty in the kidnapping case, he allegedly threatened to kill the officers if he ever got out of jail.
Sentencing hearing in drug distribution case scheduled for status
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 42-year-old man convicted in a case involving the distribution of drugs had his sentencing hearing continued recently by Judge Trish Rose. Now she has set a status hearing for Mark Wells.
The delay had to do with expert testimony in the case against Mark Wells. Judge Rose had given the state a deadline to advise the court if they want to submit an expert report in response to the defendant’s proposed expert.
Wells was arrested on Nov. 8, 2012, after the Reno County Drug Unit served a search warrant on a 2012 Ford Focus. Wells had pulled up to a residence in the 1000 block of North Washington and, as they searched the trunk, allegedly found several zip-close bags of methamphetamine, about 400 grams all together. There were also additional bags used for packaging. Wells allegedly had a glass pipe on him with residue in his pocket.
Again, the case is set for a status hearing Friday.
Hutch man scheduled for pretrial in indecent liberties case
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A local man who entered a “not guilty” plea to a single charge of aggravated indecent liberties with a child is scheduled for a pretrial hearing on Friday
Etric Jones II was arrested for the alleged crime, which occurred back on Dec. 13, 2012. The girl, who was 15 at the time, didn’t report the crime until Feb. 1, 2013, which led to the investigation’s beginning.
Jones, who was 18 at the time of the crime, is alleged to have forced the girl into inappropriate sexual relations. She claims that she told him no, while Jones claims she never said that. The two are said to have left school together, parked in an alley and things escalated from there.
The charge is a level 3 person felony with a sentencing range between 55 and 247 months in prison. The hearing in front of Judge Rose will determine if there are any plea negotiations happening, and possibly set a trial date and motions deadline.
