Hutch man arrested on suspicion of aggravated kidnapping

Demetrius Cantu

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 22-year-old Hutchinson man made a first appearance Monday morning on charges of aggravated kidnapping, criminal damage to property and interference with law enforcement.

Demetrius Cantu is accused of battering his girlfriend, grabbing her by the hair and forcing her back into a home as she tried to leave to get away from him. This happened in the 800 block of East 5th just before 1 a.m. Sunday. The alleged victim, at some point, was able to get to the bathroom, lock the door and call 911. But at some point, they became disconnected and attempts to call her back were unsuccessful.

Police then arrived and could see the two arguing inside the home. Cantu refused to open the door, according to Police Detective Tyson Myers, so they forced their way in and took Cantu into custody. He is alleged to have knocked her head into a wall, causing some damage to the plaster.

In court, he requested a reduction of the bond which was opposed by the state considering the nature of the charges. Magistrate Judge Randy McEwen agreed and the bond was left at $101,750.

Cantu is expected back in court on Wednesday morning.

Hutch man waives hearing in indecent liberties case

sex-crimes
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A local man charged with a single count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child waived his right to a preliminary hearing Monday in Reno County District Court.

Etric Jones II was arrested for the alleged crime which occurred back on Dec. 13, 2012. The girl who was 15 at the time didn’t report the crime until Feb. 1, 2013, which led to the investigation’s beginning.

Jones, who was 18 at the time of the crime, is alleged to have forced the girl into inappropriate sexual relations. She claims that she told him no, while Jones claims she never said that. District Attorney Keith Schroeder says the two left school together and parked in an alley and things escalated from there.

The charge is a level 3 person felony with a sentencing range between 55 and 247 months in prison.

Arraignment in the case will be on Dec. 1 in front of Judge Trish Rose.
