NEWTON, Kan. – Police responded to the report of a man trying to force entry into several houses in an area of Newton. At least four residences suffered damage in the attempted entries before the suspect located an unlocked door.
Officers arrived in the area and began searching for the man. An officer heard screaming coming from a residence and quickly made entry. The officer confronted the man, who had taken a 3-year-old child from his room while making statements about doing harm to the child and family.
The officer attempted to apprehend the suspect and a fight ensued. Both the officer and the suspect suffered non-critical injuries and were transported by ambulance to Newton Medical Center for treatment.
The officer was later released and the suspect was transported to a secure facility for a mental health assessment.
The family members in the home did not suffer any injuries.
