HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Reno County Commission met Tuesday and the discussion of signage for the new jail was once again brought up by Commissioner Dan Deming. He now suggested signage that would include “Justice and Improving Lives.” This was apparently suggested as an alternative to the one presented before. This latest design was presented by a private individual.
Deming also reported back that seven of the nine remaining members of the Jail Study Committee liked the idea of some type of logo for the new jail. That surprised Commissioner Brad Dillon who told Deming that he’s had nothing but negative reaction to the suggestion of a logo. Deming wanted to start the process of getting cost associated with having a stand alone sign or signage on the building using some type of logo. He talked about Wal-Mart and the catchy phrase they use and how Target countered Wal-Mart with one of its own. But, Dillon says this is not a commercial entity and wanted to stick with the simple name of “Reno County Jail.” He says the building will be there to house people who didn’t play by the rules and are being punished.
Commission Chair James Schlickau, although not sold on any logo for the new jail, did agree with Deming that they could at least get cost estimates for signage. So, that may move forward, but any logo associated with the jail doesn’t appear favored by Dillon and Schlickau.
