HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The housing problems in the city of Hutchinson have been well documented and discussed within the city government and the area Chamber of Commerce.
While the condition of the housing stock continues to be an issue, another is the lack of new home starts in the city. Ending in July, the city of Hutchinson had just three new homes built, two in April and one in June. It’s far less than the 18 new home starts at this time last year and showed a continued decline in new home construction in the city.
Housing manager Irene Hart says that a lot of developers have been slow to build spec homes due to a lack of demand. Any new construction has been a build-by-demand project. Hart says that there may be some light at the end of the tunnel as three housing developments are in the works.
Hart hopes there will be more development of mid-priced homes in the $120,000 to $140,000 range.
