HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 23-year-old Hutchinson man made a first appearance Wednesday morning after being arrested Tuesday for suspicion of being in possession of drugs, possibly with the intent to distribute.
Wayne Farnam was stopped by a South Hutchinson Police officer on the Woody Seat Freeway just after 10 p.m., for having a head lamp and tag light out on his vehicle. Officer Jake Graber says when he approached the vehicle, he could smell the odor of marijuana. The officer also discovered that Farnam had no valid driver’s license, no proof of insurance and had a warrant through Hutchinson Municipal Court.
After he was placed under arrest, they did a search of his vehicle and the officer alleges he found three black bags stuffed between the center console and the front passenger seat. One contained .81 grams of a crystal substance that field tested positive for methamphetamine. Also found was a small amount of marijuana. Another bag contained a small amount of suspected methamphetamine and other plastic bags found had residue. Also found was a red straw that had residue inside it. The third bag contained about one quarter gram of suspected marijuana. Under Miranda, Farnam admitted the marijuana was his.
In court, he seemed confused over the discovery of the other drugs including the methamphetamine, but again admitted to having the small amount of marijuana. He asked for a reduction of the $11,850 bond. But because of numerous other convictions, mostly as a juvenile, the state objected and Magistrate Judge Randy McEwen denied the suspect’s request.
The judge set a status hearing for July 16, to allow the state time to file formal charges.
