HUTCHINSON, Kan. — One of three people arrested on drug charges after a traffic stop was sentenced this morning by District Judge Tim Chambers.
He sentenced 33-year-old Robert Vigil aka Roberto Vigil to nearly seven and a half years in prison, which was jointly recommended by both the state and the defense. He was then granted three years community corrections after the state indicated the majority of drugs and the handgun found belonged to a co-defendant.
The 33-year-old admitted that on April 30, 2013, he was in possession of meth which was found next to him in the backseat of the vehicle he was a passenger. It weighed approximately 11-grams.
Vigil was riding in a vehicle driven by 29-year-old Jessica Whittier, when Reno County Sheriff Deputy Corey Graber stopped her vehicle for failing to signal at 2nd and Whiteside. She’s charged with two counts of distribution of drugs, criminal use of a weapons, possession of drug paraphernalia and no tax stamp. Her case is still pending a preliminary hearing.
Also charged was 35-year-old Dominic Vargas who now has a number of cases pending.
His most recent case includes a standoff with police. Charges include possession of marijuana with a prior conviction, felony flee and elude of a motor vehicle accident, failure to stop at an accident with damage over 1-thousand dollars, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving while suspended. This resulted in a high speed chase through the city and the standoff. That was back on April 6. He remains jailed on a 165-thousand dollar bond.
