HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With the continued problems plaguing the County Treasurers Office, Reno County is taking dollar_signaction that some other counties have.

The county announced Tuesday that they will hire a full time Internal Auditor to watch the county’s finances. The action comes as problems with the books continues.

Justin Mitchell of Adams Brown Barren and Ball, which conducts the county audits, told commissioners the county did not have trained staff to carry out the distribution of tax revenues to taxing entities or even do the daily statements. Meaghr says the software that was brought in to reconcile the books isn’t working because the staff doesn’t have enough training. He said he hopes the new person can help in that area as well.

Several area counties have a part time person to watch over their financial picture, but Reno County will hire a full time person. The
salary for such a person could hit $50,000 annually. The problems with the Treasurers Office came to light when it was discovered that the books were off by as much as $2 million. Since then the auditors have been working to bring the books in line, but says that problems continue.

Meaghr hopes to have the position filled by the end of the year.
