HUTCHINSON, Kan.— The ordinance before the Hutchinson City Council that would have prohibited skateboarding, roller blades and bicycles at George Pyle Park was defeated Tuesday morning after a split vote of the four council members present.
The ordinance was proposed after damage was done to parts of the park by skateboarders. The park had recently undergone extensive renovation. Council members Cindy Proett and Jade Piros de Carvalho voted against the ordinance. Piros- de Carvalho stated that the city tries to promote the use of its parks, then wants to restrict their use. Proett agreed. There was discussion regarding at least some restrictions on the type of activity done in the park, but that too was denied by the two council members.
With Bob Bush Absent and a split vote, the ordinance was defeated.
