A 35-year-old Hutchinson man arrested back on April 6, after he allegedly fled a Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper and Hutchinson Police was in court Wednesday where he was read the formal complaint against him.
The state has now charged Dominic Vargas with possession of marijuana with a prior conviction, felony flee and elude of a motor vehicle accident, failure to stop at an accident with damage over 1-thousand dollars, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving while suspended.
As we have been telling, the case started when the Highway Patrol Trooper observed Vargas driving and knew him to be an absconder and had warrants for his arrest. He was seen driving in the area of the 900 block of West 4th. The trooper attempted to stop his vehicle and Vargas allegedly refused to pull over and officers with the Hutchinson Police then assisted the trooper. Vargas at some point is alleged to have struck a Hutchinson Police vehicle.
He allegedly abandoned the vehicle in the 100 block of East 10th and fled on foot and went into a residence in the 100 block of East 11th. Officers set up a perimeter and an hour later, four people exited the house and were detained. One of the occupants was Vargas who was then arrested.
Vargas was also charged with interference with law enforcement in a separate matter involving drug unit detective Jeremy Hedges. This crime allegedly occurring back on January 14, when he apparently resisted the detectives while he was performing his duty as a law enforcement officer.
Vargas has other charges pending for possession of K-2 or synthetic marijuana for an arrest with two others in April of last year. He also has another case where he’s charged with possession of meth, possession of marijuana, possession of hallucinogenic mushrooms and possession of drug paraphernalia. This case goes back to September of 2012.
His bonds total 165-thousand and Magistrate Judge Randy McEwen set another status hearing to see if he’s hired an attorney for this newest case.
