The Reno County Commission Tuesday held a public hearing over the proposed building of a telecommunications tower west of Cheney Lake.
The proposal is for the 180-foot tower to be built about half mile north and east of the intersection of East Smoots Creek and South Yoder Road. This would be half mile north of the Reno / Kingman County line.
County Planner Mark Vonachen says that the total height of the tower for Nex-Tech Wireless would be 183-feet, if you include a lightning rod at the top.
The property is currently zoned “A” which allows for single dwellings and manufactured homes, so for the tower to be built, the company needs a special use permit. The county planning board already approved the proposal, but the special use permit still needs commission approval.
Company officials say the main purpose of building the tower at this location is to provide service to the Cheney Lake area as well as portions of northern Kingman and Sedgwick Counties.
Only one property owner spoke at the hearing and was in favor of the tower being built. The county didn’t take any action on the proposal Tuesday, that will come next week.
And good news for those upset about having to go out of county to renew tags for commercial vehicles or purchase tags for new one. The county plans to begin training of county employees to handle that starting next week, which means it will allow the county to start offering that service in the near future.
