Sunday appears to have been busy for Hutchinson Fireman with them responding to 3 different fire incidents.
It started around 2:20 p-m, when they responded to the 300 block of Crescent Boulevard for a structure fire. When they arrived, they found nothing showing, however once inside, they found the kitchen on fire. The fire was extinguished in 15 minutes. The kitchen was a total loss. Preliminary damage is estimated at 20-thousand dollars. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The occupants were outside at the time of the fire; one occupant went back inside and smelled smoke. All occupants waited outside until the fire department arrived. No injuries were reported.
Then at 3:45 p-m, fire units responded to the 800 block of North Kent Road for a grass fire. and found approximately a ½ acre on fire. The fire was quickly contained. The occupant was burning trash when the fire got away from them.
And at 5:56 p-m, they responded to the 3600 block of North Lucille Drive for a grass fire. Upon arrival units found approximately 10 acres of very thick brush burning a ¼ to ½ mile off the road. The fire also had caught a small cabin on fire.
The fire was contained in 30 minutes. Damage to the cabin was to the outside and some charring on floor joist. Damage estimate at $5,000. The cause of the fire was a squirrel getting into a transformer causing sparks to set the grass on fire. No injuries were reported.
The Fire Department advises residents to be extremely careful with outdoor burning. The wind was very light today and conditions are extremely dry. The fire reported on Lucille Drive initially was in very short maintained grass and spread quickly to the cabin and tall brush.
The Fire Department also encourages everyone to avoid areas where fire units are working during grass fires. Smoke can hinder visibility and crews are moving around the area to contain the fire. Increased traffic in the area slows and hinders response from the fire department. Please avoid these areas, usually there is very little to see up close that cannot be seen miles from the incident.
