Hutchinson High School

The Hutchinson High School debate and forensics program won a major trophy for the first time over the weekend.

Hutch High received the first place sweepstakes trophy for the West Kansas National Forensics League District Saturday at Moundridge. The trophy represents results from all four NFL debate tournaments during the school year.

The 2013-14 season is the first time HHS has won the debate sweepstakes trophy.

Hutch had two debaters qualify for nationals on Saturday for Lincoln-Douglas debate. Juniors Riley Crane and Brennan Schartz qualified in Lincoln-Douglas debate. Also qualifying in Lincoln-Douglas debate Saturday were seniors Brett Krambeer and Reed Crater. Krambeer and Crater, however, already qualified for nationals in cross-examination debate. NFL rules allow students to compete at nationals in only one event.

The Salthawks competed in NFL congress, public forum debate and Lincoln-Douglas debate qualifiers Friday and Saturday at Moundridge and in individual events on Saturday at Valley Center.

Hutch High placed second overall in the Valley Center tournament.

Kelly Thompson coaches debate and forensics at HHS. The Salthawks compete at Manhattan this weekend.
