A Hutchinson man accused of second degree murder who entered a plea to a lesser charge in Reno County District Court is scheduled for sentencing Friday afternoon.
21-year-old Isaac Beltran, who was facing a trial on charges of intentional second degree murder and criminal possession of a firearm, entered a plea to unintentional second degree murder. The state then dropped the firearm charge.
Beltran was convicted in the shooting death of 26-year-old Dustin Brooks in the alley behind the home where Beltran lived at 203 North Cleveland on Halloween night in 2012. Brooks suffered a gunshot wound to the torso and died after emergency surgery failed at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center.
Sentencing is set in front of District Judge Tim Chambers. His bond is set at 150-thousand dollars in this case, however he did go to prison for a short time on a conviction in a drug case from 2010, after the state revoked his community corrections. He was discharged in that case on July 25, of last year, but was immediately taken back to the Reno County jail.
The sentencing will be a special setting in front of Judge Tim Chambers.
