Reno County Courthouse 2

The Reno County Commission Tuesday approved moving ahead with getting additional bids for the roof of the Reno County Jail.

Commissioner Dan Deming last week said he was concerned that the decision to go with a thermoplastic roof as opposed to a modified bit roof, even though there is a larger cost associated with that roof, that being an additional 180-thousand dollars to the project. Depending on what the bids are with the six that bid on the project. that could mean using some contingency dollars.

They held off making a decision last week because Commissioner Brad Dillon was not present, but he had also talked with a local roofer who didn’t bid on that project and was told that the modified bit roof was the way the county should go.

The commission hopes to have those numbers in the next week or two.

With little fanfare, the county approved the closing of two small sections of Greenfield and Sulvia roads after a brief public hearing. The county decided to vacate the roads from K-61, over some railroad crossings to the next intersection along those county roads. They decided to do this because of the railroad grade crossings on those two roads were closed at the request of Union Pacific Railroad.

They also approved a request from the treasures department to purchase software from New World that will allow the department to reconcile the books by automation as opposed by hand. The department has been plagued by problems getting written ledgers over to the county software system causing the county books to be off by as much as 3-million dollars at one point. The cost of the software was 14-thousand, 500-dollars.
