The Reno County Commission Tuesday approved the contract and associated cost of building a new jail, minus approval of accepting cost for building the roof.
Commissioner Dan Deming was concerned that the decision to go with a thermoplastic roof as opposed to a modified bit roof may not be the way to go, even though there is a large cost difference. Ben Vanderau with J-E Dunn Construction and Dan Rowe with Treanor Architects agree that the modified bit roof is a better roof, but could add an additional 180-thousand dollar cost to the project.
It was decided to approve the numbers on the project including bids from sub-contractors with the exception of the roof. That will be discussed again next week when Commissioner Brad Dillon is at the meeting. That could mean using some contingency dollars if the commission decides to go with that type of roof.
There were four local bidders that will be awarded contracts with the project. They include Miller Homebuilders for concrete, M.L. Nevius Builders for masonry, APAC Shears for asphalt paving and Masterson Design Group for Landscaping and Irrigation. The total amount of work of all of the work by local contractors comes to 2-million, 669-thousand, 689-dollars.
That’s out of 31-bids that have been awarded to contacts for work on the projects although according to information provided to us, no contractor has been named for the roofing part of the project thus far.
So far, they were able to keep the project within the scope of the budget however, they did add kitchen equipment at a cost of 375-thousand dollars. That bring the total to just under 21-million, 465-thousand dollars. That’s assuming that current low bidder for the roof is awarded a contract.
The commission was also warned that the contingency dollars will most likely be used during the project. That comes to a little over 1.3-million dollars including the owner contingency amount and construction contingency.
They are still hoping the weather begins to cooperate to begin the project in the next month or so.
