Reno County Courthouse 2

The county’s effort to get grant money from the Kansas Department of Transportation for a bike trail along the old K-61 highway was unsuccessful, that according to County Commission Chair Dan Deming.

He told us this afternoon that K-DOT had received 91-applications from across the state, 37 of which were approved, the Reno County application not being one of them.

The county had sought 200-thousand dollars from the state added to the 61-thousand the county would add in which would have connected the Dillon Nature Center to the Sand Hills State Park and then Medora. This would have run along the old K-61 highway from 43rd to Medora and would have been built while the county completes road work on the old highway which they plan to do anyway next year.

So, whether such a trail will be built now seems less likely, unless the county decides they want to put up all the money themselves.
