Hutchinson Fire Crews responded to the Wiley Building for a structure fire around 9:45 a-m, Tuesday morning. When they arrived, they were directed by construction crews to a fire in a chute. The chute extended from the basement to the 4th floor. Firefighters had to cut into the chute to make access to the fire area. Once access was made crews found some old construction material, most likely from original construction, which was burning inside the chute. Crews also made access to the highest point of the chute to ensure no other hazards were present.
The fire was controlled in 10-minutes. Units were on scene for about an hour. Since the building is under demolition and construction no damage was caused.
The construction crew was cutting some metal away from the chute and sparks ignited the wood in the chute. No one was injured in the fire.
