The Hutchinson School Board Monday formally considered the framework for the 2014-19 strategic plan. The framework, known as the Results Policies, drives virtually everything the district does.
For the past year, district staff has been setting the stage for the proposed results policies.
The proposal simplifies and streamlines the framework. For the current plan, which was adopted in 2009, the document had a mission statement, a vision statement and a Results 1 policy. The proposed 2014-19 plan simply has a Results 1 statement, which also serves as the district mission – “Students graduate with the knowledge, skills and behaviors to be college and career ready.”
The board will vote on the results policies at its Jan. 27 meeting and begin looking at definitions of key terms within the policies.
They also heard from secondary counselors about the district’s bullying prevention program.
Debbie Bradstreet, counselor at Hutchinson Middle School – 7, said the middle school uses a curriculum known as “Bullies to Buddies.” The curriculum focuses on skills young teens can use to deal with bullies.
Jeff Morris, Hutchinson High School counselor, said the focus at Hutch High is broad-based. Before bullying occurs, high school staff focuses on building relationships with students. When bullying does occur, peer-to-peer mediation is one of the first steps. If that doesn’t work or is not appropriate, Hutch High has a social worker that works with students. If more interventions are needed, administrators and the school resource officer can be brought in to deal with bullying.
